Malay Cultural Angklung Programme
The Malay Cultural Angklung Programme teaches a class to play music together on the angklung, a bamboo instrument that sounds a single note when it is shaken. MOE primary and secondary schools and international schools can book it, and organisations can ask for it too.

What is an angklung?
An angklung is two to four bamboo tubes hung in a bamboo frame. Each one produces a single note or chord, so nobody can carry a tune alone, and a melody only appears when every player comes in at the right moment. UNESCO inscribed the Indonesian angklung on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
What do students do in the programme?
Each student holds an angklung tuned to their note and shakes it when the music reaches that note. Most of the work is listening and timing, because the class plays one melody between them.
The programme sits under the Creative Mind, one of the 3 Minds our programmes are built on.
Which schools can book it?
MOE primary and secondary schools, and international schools. Organisations can ask for the programme too. Tell us the level and the number of students you have in mind, and we will plan around them.
How is the programme set up for a school?
Every school's needs are different, so we agree the number of sessions and the group size with each school before the programme starts. Send us your term dates with your enquiry and we can begin from there.
Usual number of sessions, and who supplies the instruments: To be confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Who can book the Malay Cultural Angklung Programme?
MOE primary and secondary schools and international schools can book it. Organisations can ask for it as well.
Can the programme be adjusted for our school?
Yes. We agree the number of sessions and the group size with each school, because no two schools need the same thing.
How many notes does one angklung play?
One. Each angklung produces a single note or chord, which is why a class plays a tune together, with every student covering their own notes.
